Music

Someone once said to me, "Music is my life." I didn't believe him, because he was 14, but I can't imagine a world without music.

Artist: eels
Wow.
Like most people, I came across eels with their first single, "Novocaine for the Soul," which was pretty successful. It's taken me until this year to appreciate them much beyond that first offering, but for the past few weeks I've had their 6 albums practically on repeat.
Everett's singing voice is unmistakable, and contributes to a feeling of consistency throughout their discography, but the range of music they have produced is impressive. From the cheerfully downtrodden geek-rock highpoints of Beautiful Freak and Daisies of the Galaxy to the sparse, despair-soaked beginning of Electro-Shock Blues, we're left with the certainty that Everett knows and feels exactly what he's singing about. Surely this is the rarest and most powerful commodity art has to offer, and allows us to identify with him.

High points:
Daisies of the Galaxy / It's a Motherfucker
Electro-Shock Blues / P.S. You Rock My World
Oh! What a Beautiful Morning / Feelin' Good

Artist: U2
Album: Achtung Baby
U2 have been around forever, and they're still making great music, but for me Achtung Baby is unsurpassed. From the flawless riffs of "Ultraviolet" to the soulful lament of "One," it stands proud above the hideous synths and insincere lyrics of the 80s, and still sounds fresh today.
