Books
I love a good book. You can divide the world into those who read and those who don't, and the latter are really missing out. Then again, they probably say the same about me and football
- Author: Garth Nix
Title: The Old Kingdom Trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen)
- Impressive fiction. Beautifully paced, the story flows effortlessly between the characters and around the refreshingly imaginative world. A textbook example of a well structured trilogy, with a self-contained introductory book and plenty more meat in the followups.
- Author: Roger Zelazny
Title: The Amber Chronicles
- This is a serious marathon. Ten books grouped into two sets of five, and enough to keep even the fastest reader immersed for some time. Fortunately there's enough character development, political intrigue, war and magic to keep any fan of the genre happy for a long time--and let's face it, these books practically redefined the genre over the twenty years in which they were written.
The most engaging thing about these books was the opportunity to work out all the mysteries from the hundreds of tiny clues before the author handed it over in a plate. Rather like a Sherlock Holmes mystery, this provided the kind of mental exercise which is so rare in fantasy fiction.
Definitely worth the effort if you can fit it into your bookcase/schedule.
